Twilight was obsessive and overpowered Pinkie was wacky Fluttershy was shy Rarity was fabulous and obsessed with crystals Rainbow Dash was competitive and kind of a jerk to Fluttershy that one time Applejack was dependable and bad at lying
Not much to say about King Sombra, but I'm sure the fandom will fill in the gaps. Before you know it he'll be portrayed as a kind and benevolent ruler and he was unjustly thrown from power by Celestia and Luna.
Songs were pretty good. though the Crystal Fair song was definitely the better of the two.

So, I waited for this to be up in 1080p before watching it. I was tempted to go with 720, but I had to have it be right.
I'd pretty much seen the first 9 minutes of the episode through the various websites posting over the past two weeks, so it wasn't anything new. But...Celestia and Luna's conversation foreshadows ominous things.
I though the rest of the episode was great. It didn't quite have the feeling of the Season 1 or 2 premiere, but i'm fine with that. I sort of wish that they had tried to use the Elements of Harmony on Sombra and had it fail miserably. :p
Twilight learning to use shadow magic can't be a good thing. They may not address it again this season, they may. Either way, it foretells nothing good. And what was that binder/folder that Luna had at the end of the episode? It looked shadowy and forbidden.
Oh, and one last thought about this episode:
Clearly it's going to get out of .

'Twas an interesting episode. Good to see more history of Equestria with that Crystal Empire. I do wish that they had developed Sombra more. He had huge potential as a villain, yet they did not explain his motive for taking over the Empire, nor did they explain how he escaped from that crevasse. But yeah. First dead villain. It's going to be interesting to see where they take Twilight's advanced studies. I do hope it has a plausible conclusion.
But heck that season 3 preview looks awesome.

Episode wasn't particulary good. <5 lines of a Luna with a completely different voice, again, did not make up for how mediocre the episode was.

Yeah, not even close to as good as Return of harmony.
The villain was just ridiculously uninteresting in every conceivable way.
Although i really want an instrumental version of the faire song.

I'm with you on that one, just the faces on all 3 of them. There is also the fact that Pinkie is wearing a joker costume but I find that somewhat normal.

Considering that her cutie mark literally is the crystal heart, I already saw that coming.
All in all, it was a good episode, but it suffered from the same primary flaw as the pilot. It had to bear the burden of setting up events to come rather than focusing on its own. It always seems like the half-hour format just leaves you wondering what more they could have done, which makes me really wish that they would make a movie sometime.

honestly I did notice and I sorta called it a month before this episode aired by which I mean her and shinning would become the leaders of the crystal ponies however once the episode aired it was kinda obvious, cutie mark is the crystal heart, her magic is love based which is what powers the crystal heart/kingdom. the bigger questions are why wasn't she banished with the kingdom? or was she and she escaped? why didn't she tell twilight about the crystal heart herself? in a Canterlot wedding why did she look like shinning armors age (teenager) in twilights flashback? Is she really the original Crystal Princess? I mean twilight got her cutie mark as a foal before she even met her friends and wielded the elements yet her cutie mark foreshadowed her using the elements. perhaps Cadence was the same way. why are Pink sleep deprived Alicorns so damn aerodynamic?!

I do wish they'd explain why Luna seemed to be particularly full of animosity towards Twilight. It makes no sense considering that she had only just volunteered to help her and also the fact that they got on well in "Luna Eclipsed".
Maybe it'll get explained later?
