If we're going with FFVI, we can't forget this one:

I could go on and on and on about the incredible score for this game. I feel that it was Uematsu's finest work ever and I regularly listen to it while driving.

The Opera scene (when you control Celes) is probably the one that gets me the most and tugs at my heart strings every time, but over the years and after many, MANY replays of the game, this is the track that probably sticks out the most to me...

The second highest rated comments says it all: "This is what honor sounds like."

~D

EDIT: I decided rather than double posting, i'll just tack on an addendum to this post. The piece of Final Fantasy music that gets deep into my soul more than any other is this:

Rydia's theme from FF IV. She wasn't my favorite character from that game (that honor goes to Kain), but her theme resonates with me all the time. She was a small child who had her world ripped apart and was forced into this terrible war and political struggle. She then gets taken from the mortal realm into the land of summoned creatures and matures 10 years in a matter of days/weeks. It's symbolic of what happens to people during times of difficulty and war. We're forced to grow up quickly and have to be able to defend ourselves. My favorite version of this song however, is from the album Celtic Moon, which if you've never heard it is probably the best thing to ever happen to Final Fantasy music since Uematsu himself wrote it. They only did FF IV, but I really wish they had done VI as well. It would have been truly amazing.

~D...again. :p

Too much RPG not enough Adventure!

Here's a classic I'm sure most people are familiar with:

I realized the moment I fell into the fissure the book would not be destroyed as I had planned...

Conjures memories of playing this game in the computer lab in elementary school; good times. What's interesting is that Myst was originally intended to have no music at all, to reinforce the impression that it's YOU exploring those worlds. However, later in development, they decided to try adding some, and it enhanced the mood of the game so much they gave it a full soundtrack.

When Myst came out, it was so hugely popular that it spawned a bunch of similar games in its wake. Most of them were pretty mediocre, but one of them was actually quite good and has unfortunately been largely forgotten: The Journeyman Project. Developed by Presto Studios, the company that later went on to make Myst 3 Exile before finally dissolving. It released about a year after Myst and features a compelling time travel story.

This song plays when you're trying to find your way through a mine maze on a mars colony. It seems to just loop a bunch of times at first, but as it goes on your character starts to run out of air and suffocate, making the music slow down and you start to hear heavy breathing and a heartbeat pounding.

Finally, from a more recent game, a piece from The Longest Journey:

This game is a masterpiece. At a time when the adventure genre was basically dead, this game quietly released to relatively little fanfare, but massive critical acclaim. The art, the narrative, the voice acting, everything is just incredible in this game. Unfortunately, the studio that made it (Funcom) has largely shifted to MMOs and left this franchise to languish unfinished. I still hold out hope that the story will be continued some day, but even so, this game tells a complete story in itself and is more than worth the 10 bucks on steam to play it.

I agree with Dr. Rush. There's too much RPG music here.

This is the theme from one of my favorite adventure games out there. It never really got the fanbase it deserved so I know a lot of you have never heard of The Neverhood.

Then again. You can never really have too much RPG. :3

Credits theme of one of two games that will always share a special place in my heart. The other game being the sequel.
This is Suikoden

And last but not least; one of my most favorite game themes EVER!

"Father and son" from Metal Gear Solid 4.

This thing know how to make even me cry at my screen... I don't think I've ever listened to it or seen the scene it's from without freezing in place and gradually lose my vision.

You do know there's a sequel, right? Dreamfall: The Longest Journey? It's not even close to being as good as number 1 though... There's a reason why FunCom left the franchise. They stopped being awesome...

Speaking of the longest journey: How many here does NOT know it was made in Norway? Shame on you!

Yeah, I bought Dreamfall the day it came out. I agree it's nowhere near as good as the original, but it was still interesting in its own right. It raised new questions about the world that I crave answers to, and ended essentially on a cliffhanger. Hopefully Tornquist can find a way to finish the story, even if it's not a game but rather a novel or something. Unlikely, but I can dream..

Anyway, can't let myself post in here without adding more music.

Continuing with the adventure theme, this is the Saturday Fair tune from the somewhat obscure Sierra game Conquests of the Longbow. We were talking about it the other day on mumble, and it reminded me how good it is, especially the music.

Not to belabor one genre too much, I'll switch gears to platformer. This is one of my favorite games, and it has fantastic music. Before Gears of War, before Unreal, Epic Games was known as Epic MegaGames and produced shareware titles similar to Apogee.

At a time when many PC games were still using the OPL2 FM-synth chip for their music, this game used tracker music for a full PCM soundtrack. This was more common on systems like the Amiga or Apple IIgs because they had sound chips that could mix multiple channels in hardware, whereas the soundblaster provided only a single PCM channel, requiring the program to mix the audio itself. This made it somewhat impractical to use this type of music until systems were fast enough to handle it.

EDIT: Changed iframes to Flash tags.

Of course there's music besides the RPG genre out there. Smile A great score helps cement a great game's place in history.

How about a song from my favorite game of all time?

Every time I hear this, it gives me goosebumps! Dat opening crescendo! The complexity of the score is fantastic given that it was on the SNES. It's so majestic. I really can see this being the theme of some monarch somewhere.

Here's another favorite track from an amazing soundtrack:

...yeah. I totally went there. This was hands down one of the most innovative games that I have ever played. The best part? When it came out, brand new, it was $20. Effing sweet. The sequel wasn't as good, but was strong.

This is a video I found recently. It combines an amazing track with some of the best lines from some of my favorite animes, not to mention the video itself is great.

The remix for this is great too, but the original is amazing. Every time I hear this I have to singalong.

This thread is awesome. MOAR.

Branching out from games a bit, but still computer graphics related, here are a few songs from one of my favorite... well, I guess it's not really a "movie" per se, but rather a collection of music videos done with computer graphics in the early 90s. Part of a four part series called "The Mind's Eye," these are from the second film "Beyond the Mind's Eye" released in 1992 which is the only one I actually owned on VHS. All of the songs in this "album" are composed by Jan Hammer, who is famous for producing the soundtrack for Miami Vice.

Seeds of Life:

This one is probably my favorite. I love how it manages to tell a story without any words or dialog, but purely with imagery.

Brave New World:

This one has a lot of fascinating geometry in it. Especially at around 1:03 with the rotating shape where you can never actually see the back face, even though it keeps spinning.

Transformers:

This one is especially interesting because parts of it look like some kind of theoretical future video game, which is funny because it could easily be done in real time now, or at least a lot of it could be.

Too Far:

I love the song in this one, get it stuck in my head constantly. Plus I have to wonder what TOO FAR JUICE tastes like.

EDIT: Changed iframes to flash tags.

Is it still against the forum rules to double post if there is at least a month between them?

Anyways rather than posting 20 vids have 1 hour 2 Steps From Hell Cupcaaakes~!

On threads like this I would say no.

Nice to see this thread again. Music += 2;

Been on a huge Sonic kick lately. The enhanced edition of Sonic CD on steam has both soundtracks of the game, which is awesome. I love the time travel mechanic and the different takes on the music in the different time periods.

^Epic Sonic CD music.

I'm not a fan of mash-ups, but when I do enjoy one I'm surprised.
