Class Mentors Empty
PostSubject: Class Mentors   Class Mentors I_icon_minitimeMon Dec 10, 2012 2:57 pm

MLP Friendship is Magic now has Class Mentors!

The purpose of the Mentors is to help our members improve their Star Wars: the Old Republic experience by excelling at their respective roles. Experienced Mentors, all of whom have been playing the game since early access, have been selected for each Republic Advanced Class and combat roles (DPS, Tanking and Healing) to help you out, give you pointers on gearing, specs and rotations and maximise your effectiveness. The Mentors have voluntarily opted to join and are doing it in their free time. Please, show appreciation towards the Mentors by not bugging them about every diminutive detail of a class. They are not meant to teach you how to play a class but to steer you in the right direction as there is no substitution for hands-on experience.

What you can expect:

-The Mentors will be ready to answer your queries in game. They may, however, be busy with Operations or PvP and as such may not be able to immediately answer your questions, please respect this.

-Some Mentors may also decide to post their advice on the class specific forums. Such posts will bear the [Mentor] tag.

The Mentors:

The Mentors' names are their general names as used on the Forums. If you want to see which in game characters are the Mentors, please check their member's notes in the in-game guild list. Each officer Mentor has a primary and secondary specialisation but they are fully capable to advise on both their respective classes. The non-officer Mentors have only primary classes.

Manes:
Derpy - Sage (Heal/DPS) - Guardian (Tank)
Fluttershy - Gunslinger (DPS) - Sage (Heal)
Lyra - Commando (Heal/DPS) - Guardian (DPS)
Pinkie Pie - Vanguard (Tank) - Sentinel (DPS)

Royal Guards:
Amorphic - Sentinel (DPS) - Scoundrel (Heal/DPS)
Ryuukhang - Shadow (Tank) - Commando (DPS)
Shinjiro - Vanguard (DPS) - Sentinel (DPS)

Wonderbolts:
Cloudchaser - Shadow (DPS/Tank)
Zeern - Scoundrel (Heal)

Should you have any questions or comments post them here or ask Derpy (Derpy'dreselus, Toughen, Bluffin, Roughen).

I can do Scoundrel healing and Sentinel dps as well, even though it's not listed. If you need help, just ask any of us.

Would it be posible to list the specs of the mentors in announcements for each class forums? I don't think Kenshi can help with Assault Commando for example Smile (at least I think he's Arsenal?)

Edit: and this is why you check before you post...I did not notice Lyra in there

I don't think we need specs as the idea is that the mentors will have at least an understanding of the other specs. Plus some players, like me, may jump between specs for PvE and PvP.

It helps having someone who is rather familiar with a spec though.

Tactics, TK and Assault mando just stood out to me

Tactics: Shin should advise them to take assault anyways lol
TK: I know Dres has at least fought a training dummy in it? And he did kinda make the thread so he must've thought about it and found himself to be good enough for it
Assault mando: I know Kenshi is arsenal and I know I am gunnery. I specced into assault once and sucked.

That's why I called it out xD (not saying Kenshi is bad at it btw...just you know, didn't think clearly)
(and edited my realisation of oh Kaizu is listed as it as well who runs assault when DPSing)

Sidenote: no Zee commando heals? *Gasp*
Sidenote 2: i this because wonderbolts only 1 class allowed? (or jut a coincidence)

Sidenote 2.5: hey I read the entire post hurr durr. I guess Sidenote 2 is correct
Sidenote 3: Lyra himself admitted at sucking at guardian DPS though...

Tactics: I recently got Lick'my to 50 and am going to learn Tactics well so we have someone who knows details about the spec. Granted, I'm mostly going to use it for PvP, better to have that than nothing.

TK: Dreselus PvP'd TK once and DPS'd but hated it I think. I can poke Twi hard and get him to come back maybe. Bleh!

Zee: Kaizu knows Medic healing just as well, and Zee gave up on his Medic healer since he got his Scoundrel to 50. Zeevee (his Commando) now DPS's with a bowcaster. I believe Zee said he was 1250 DPS or something, so he hasn't taken him very far.

Edit: Kaizu is the only DPS Guardian we have as a Wonderbolt or officer, basically it's a win-by-default deal.

I have run TK in HM EC and 2 bosses of HM TFB. HM EC was the requirement for Primary class Mentor.

That is not entirely true, so let me correct you real quick. I have stated that Guardian DPS in and of itself is quite low compared to other classes when equally geared. I, on the other hand, am not an invalid when it comes to preforming the job, as I have extensively tested rotations and specs with both Vig and Focus, at every tier of my gearing process. I have Focus situations and rotations locked down to a perfect science. Vig on the other hand is sometimes frustrating and often boring in comparison, and while I could do it, I don't prefer to. I like Focus better. Focus also has consistantly put out higher damage than Vig in my many tests.

I would also like to point out that this has been a 'behind-the-scenes' effort and issues of qualification in terms of both classes, roles and individual specs have been considered and discussed extensively. Originally certain mentors had additional focus but this has been limited (example: Pinkie was meant to do Vanguard DPS but he has only ever run Assault so it was given to Shin who is also running Assault but has been encouraged to research and test out Tactics).

The only class lacking in expertise is Guardian due to no available mentors and they were defaulted as secondaries (there is no requirement that the Mentors have run HM EC on their secondaries) to me (have done 1/4 HM EC on Juggernaut Tank) and Kiazu (has done 3/4 HM EC on Guardian DPS).

Maybe each mentor should introduce themselves in the appropriate class forums. Most of us newbies dont know Arther from Martha other than the group of manes who always raid together.

It would also be appropriate to list a preferred spec/gearing/rotation for those of us who would like to raid.

Working up small intros wouldn't be a bad idea. We're still used to the guild being pretty tight, close enough to the point where everyone knows each other and has progressed together. Granted, I did forget Amorphic has a Guardian DPS too.

I'll touch on this statement briefly. The idea with the class mentors is to be able to assist with all facets of their assigned Advance Class for their main and a portion or majority for their secondary class if applicable. They may make a thread about their favorite spec, gear, and rotation, but ultimately they should be able to help players prepare for endgame content not matter what tree they run. For example, just because I prefer Dirty Fighting for Operations doesn't mean we expect all Gunslingers to run that spec, nor do I want people to only come to me for that spec when I know Sharpshooter, Saboteur, and the DF/Sab hybrid.

Mentors will be doing their best to help out, and some will go the extra mile by creating guides on gear, specs, and rotations when they have time or feel it's necessary.

TL;DR Everything will come in due time!

I can't say I've run Assault for Commandos, but I can help out with Commandos in general. And I also have a Guardian Tank on the same level as Derpy, and have done a bit of DPSing as well. So, I'm willing to also help out.

I cannot force them to do that but it will be taken into consideration. There are lists of the Mentors all over the forums and Enjin and if you want to know their alts simply see the Member notes in the in-game Guild List. The member notes currently do not list what role the Mentors specialise in due to character limits (I may change it later today if there is enough space). And even if someone for instance contacts Pinkie about Vanguard DPS (which he may actually be able to help with even though he is the tank mentor) he will be able to direct them to Shinjiro who is the designated Vanguard DPS Mentor.

As far as summary of advice goes this is also optional for the Mentors. Some have already posted and I know of few who are meaning to post in the future (such as I). Please respect that the Mentors are often quite busy people, IRL and in guild and may not have time to make threads but will still be able to help you in game.
