Notes:

By "pure" I refer to putting as many points as possible into enhancing that role. For example, likely maxing the Shield Tech tree for a Vanguard and any left over points dropped into those base skills you use while tanking.

For hybrids, it likely means not getting the top tier talent/abilities in a particular tree and more like a 20/21 or 21/12/8 type of split between skill trees.

Just curious where others are leaning at the moment, to get a feel for how the overall guild make up is shaking out. Notice that I didn't bother to put specific ACs, as the role, not the AC is my interest, especially since the loot bag reveal. Also, for those of you like me who will definitely be rolling multiple characters, this poll only refers to your initial character.

For me, I'm currently on the fence between tanking and healing. Sadly, the decision may come down to how the legacy system shakes out. Pardon?

I'll go for as much tank as possible. I always like tanking. ^_^

I like all three roles. My main in WoW was a Hunter, so I got used to DPS. Then I had a Holy Priest and a Prot Paladin, so I got to experience heals and tanking. I'm ok with any role. Healing doesn't seem to be a mega priority and I know that most of the people going Consular want to do heals, so I think i'll try Shadow/Infiltration. I hate Rogues, but that's what it looks like i'm going to be. :p

I chose Tank/DPS. Since I am a tad inexperienced with MMO's (at least compared to most of you guys), I'm not sure what role I would enjoy most. I know I want to be a Trooper, and the Vanguard seems more interesting to me than the Commando, so I guess that makes me a tank. However, judging by the description, the "shield" tree of the Vanguard also has ways to boost your party as well. So I will probably be more like a Tank/Buffer, because I like playing as classes that support teammates in ways other than healing.

I'm experienced in theorycrafting as DPS, but I've always off-tanked as needed. So, I imagine the same will happen in TOR.

I'm planning on going full tank, although historically, I've managed to put out a lot of DPS while doing that. Don't ask how, I don't know either

I get that. My Paladin was always one of the top two DPS in like, 90% of my instance runs. And people were amazed at how well I tanked. It got a little boring after a while. Then I started doing Cataclysm Heroics. Brix were shat.

I have the most experience with the healing spec, so I'll be investing all of my points and enhancements into that field. Whatever is left over I will dump into team buffs or some tanking attributes, if there are any tanking attributes for a Sage. I find coupling burst heals with just a little tanking is really effective in long-term PvP and emergency situations in PvE (i.e. the tank drops agro).

Well I plan on return to the AJ Officer before the release so my first char will be a Smuggler and pure dps however, I will plan on having a tank and healer to cover any needed roles.

Heh, another theorycrafter whee! SO awesome! I'm in a similar boat. I've always excelled at DPS+CC or Healing+CC.

I've done some tanking, just not tons, but the ranged tank really caught my attention from when it was first announced. Add in some RP background ideas and I find myself bouncing between Vanguard full tanky, Commando Combat Medic heavy healing, or Sawbones all heals. DPS for once is surprisingly for me 3rd on my list.

Sorry, no tanking for the Sage. At least from what I understand thus far. Confounded ponies...

JC trees as I understand them:

Sage
  • Telekinetics (dps:r)
  • Seer (heals)
  • Balance (shared)

Shadow
  • Infiltration (dps:s/stealth)
  • Kinetic Combat (tanking)
  • Balance (shared)

By tanking talents, she could be talking about Survival talents, like +5% health, or -1% incoming damage, which in WoW and Rift weren't uncommon in healing trees, and I suspect the shared trees will have a good bit of survivability since that's one of the few things ever role can use

They've said that shadow tanking is primarily about evasion. How exactly that will work is anyone's guess.

A few games use evasion tanking primarily Rifts rouge tank spec and to an extent Druid tanks in WoW they have less dmg mitigation then other tanks wearing leather or not being able to block/parry but they don't need to reduce the dmg they take because they just avoid taking the dmg in the first place

Well, in 5-mans, nearly all tanks could put out some insanely passive AoE damage. It was kinda silly, but made tanking fun.

Yeah, I meant talents that you would probably find in the Balance tree. Increased health, increased action pool, increased block, and etc... I also fixed your post in my quote Rydel. Muffins!?!

Applejack already beat me to the punch on this one. In MMOs, like WoW and SWG, there are typically many kinds of tanks. The default tanking stats that you want high are usually health and armor, but then there are secondary sets of skills. These skills are typically block, parry, and sometimes dodge (evasion). Block just negates some damage, parry the same as block but reliant on a different stat (example: strength increases block, agility increases parry), and then evasion increases the chance to receive a glancing blow (similar to block and parry), or have the attack miss you entirely. Some tanks instead of relying on pure armor and block choose to stack a high amount of stats just to dodge attacks. They're equally effective in general, but one is better than the other depending on the situation. For example, get a debuff that lowers health or armor, doesn't matter much if you are a parry/evade tank. Get a debuff that makes you slower, if you have a lot of health/armor what does it matter? Everything has its purpose and its place!

Yep everything has its place, going more in depth and using WoW as the exampled game there are 3 main ways to make a tank 1st Stam stacking which is where you just go for as much life you can possible get on your char 2nd mitigation tanks that while max health is good they try to reduce the dmg they take instead of taking it full on by blocking and bumping up their armor as much as they can. Then there are avoidance tanks who don't focus much for max life or reducing the dmg they take but avoiding it all together. each of these types have their place if their is a huge ability that will do huge amounts of dmg to your tank you'll want a stam stacker it will hurt your healers mana reserves keeping him topped off but he will survive the hit while a mit tank might as well and be more healer friendly if they fail to block the attack they're doomed same with an avoidance tank if you fail to dodge/parry it you going down this is what we had to resort to when my guild first did heroics in Cata we had to get our tank to stack everything for the most life possible. however if their are a lot of smaller attacks comming in rapidly an avoidance tank is the best, example pulling multiple mobs even if the mobs only do 1000 dmg when you have 20 mobs hitting for 1000 dmg thats a lot of dmg but if you can avoid 30-40% of those attacks you healers will be a lot happier at the end of the fight. basicly it all comes down to the fight mechanics and your healers gear/skill if your healer can't keep mana through the whole fight because your taking too much dmg then the healer needs better gear or a better rotation or tank needs better gear/skill or its possible the fight just calls for a different type of tank. hope this explains a bit more on different types of tanks theres more then just main tank and off tanks =P

Either heal focus with DPS abilities or vice versa. Non-force healing seems kinda dorky, though...

I plan on leveling dps, and possibly doing entry dungeons as dps to gear up for healing, or depending on how healing as a consular works, I may just start healing off the bat. I'll have to see how it compares to something like a Shaman or Paladin, which were the only healing classes I played.
